Live your life on purpose in 3 easy steps18 May 2017
Do you want to be able to look back on your life and be able to say, I lived my life on my terms and I am happy with how I lived it?
Or are you fearful that you'll continue to let life take over you, to render you powerless, where you're constantly chasing your tail to stay on top of things?
Do you feel like you live for others, seeking to please them rather than fulfil your dreams?
If this resounds with you, come along as I help you to learn how to take back that control, and teach you how to live your best life right now, in this moment.
Being a people pleaser isn't something that's necessarily your own doing, as there's much deeper things at play here. If you put others first and your own life on hold and this is a constant part of your life, then this is due to a lack of self belief and confidence. If you seek approval from others rather than from yourself, there's a reason why. It's often easier and makes you feel better instantly but not in the long term. It's the wolf in sheep’s clothing - once that feeling has left, you will then try and seek it again by pleasing others to get it back.
The only other way to replicate these feelings, but this time for life (and without needing others for validation), is when you feel the confidence and belief in yourself, and you genuinely believe it.
This is living life on purpose and here’s how to get it in three easy steps:
1. Honour you
Once a day do something for you, solely for your own benefit and no-one else. Read a book, go for a run, take time out, whatever works for you. Do it for you and be ok with that.
If you're struggling to see how this could be possible because life is just too busy and you couldn't possibly find a second, here's some ideas. If you've got young children, book them in with a babysitter or your other half, and head to the local beauty salon for some pampering and a massage. If you don't have the budget for that, take that time to go and sit and walk on the beach. Just have that time to yourself, make it a priority.
If you've got a really busy job and literally can't find a second to spend on yourself, think about this for a second. Are you spending the day chasing your tail, not focusing on tasks because there's so much coming at you? In this situation, your gift to yourself could be 10 minutes of meditation in the mornings. The amount of space this is going to free up in your mind will be incredible, and everyone can fit in 10 minutes a day! There are lots of good guided meditation apps on the app store and you might even find you become better at your job as a result.
2. Learn to say no
A lot of time we're so willing to please that we can put ourselves last! This is not a good way to be and will most definitely lead to feelings of resentment and potentially burnout.
So start saying no when someone wants you to do something you are not ok with, or even something that you could do but you don't really want to. Start small if you're not the type to say no, try it here and there. Before you know it, you'll realise the benefits as you start to live your life more on purpose for you!
3. Plan your legacy
This one is a biggie and can really make you stop and figure out where you're going wrong. Sit down and write down your legacy - what do you want to be known for? What do you want the people to be saying if you were a spectator at your own funeral? Do you want them to be saying good things, about the amazing things you achieved and how you lived your life on purpose? Or will it be a life only half lived?
It's amazing how clarifying this question is. Think about what you want to leave your loved ones and then compare it with how you're currently living. If the two don't match, you know what you need to do in order to live your life on purpose. The key here is small steps, you can't flick a switch overnight so this one is worth revisiting often.
If you know you need help in this area, then I have a downloadable exercise for you to complete which is an exert from our online course Just Be Me. You can download the exercise here.
